The question: Which is more important, the journey or the destination?
Quick – before you read on, what does your intuition tell you?
In life, the destination—our dreams, like a fulfilling career or a lasting legacy—gives us a reason to move forward, a guiding star to aim for. But the journey, the daily steps filled with laughter, struggles, and growth, shapes who we are and how we experience the world. Focusing only on the destination might lead to a hollow victory, missing the richness of the present, while wandering aimlessly without a goal can leave us lost.
So, which is more important?
Picture life as a hike through a vast, unpredictable forest. The destination—a peak you want to reach—gives you a reason to keep moving. It could be a specific goal or simply the hope of a better view. But the journey—the paths you take, the views you savor, the stumbles and recoveries—is what makes you stronger, wiser, and more connected to the world around you. If you only stare at the peak, you might miss the beauty of the forest or exhaust yourself before you arrive. But if you only wander the trails without aiming for the peak, you might never see the view you dreamed of.
In life, the destination gives us purpose, but the journey gives us meaning. The two are intertwined: a meaningful journey makes the destination sweeter, and a clear destination makes the journey worthwhile. Neglecting either risks an unfulfilled life—either chasing a goal at the cost of joy or drifting without ever finding purpose.
So, what’s the answer? As humans we often think it needs to be one or the other – we’ve gotten good at choosing sides haven’t we? But what if it’s a trick question?
This summer, I’ve said good-bye to a few special people in my life who transitioned to their heavenly home and I’ve been reflecting on the journey of life. What if the journey, nor the destination is the most important part? What if the most important part is the company we keep along the way?
The friends, family, mentors along the way all add depth, offer support, share joy, bring lessons, and allow us to experience the full spectrum of emotions and opportunities to love and be loved deeply – all the things that make the path meaningful. Think about it—will you cherish the moment you “arrive” or the memories forged with those who walked with you, shaping the story of your life?
Thank you for shaping mine.
XO Juli
