May 30, 2022 Just Because I Can’t See It Doesn’t Mean It Isn’t Real

One of the hardest conditions to understand within others (without having the experience ourselves) is mental wellness. Anxiety and depression (to name a few) seem to be at an all-time high these days. To the rest of the world, those who experience struggles with mental wellness, appear to be healthy and normal. And yet, those who are in the grips of the experience, often feel isolated, alone, different and/or all eyes are on them.

I remember as a kid, my parents would often say “you never know what goes on behind closed doors…” when something surprising would happen in the community. Recently, after meeting a young, bright, beautiful, talented, athletic teenage girl who had revealed to me that she had been “cutting” to distract her from the pains of life, I thought to myself, “we never know what goes on in someone’s mind…” We can’t see emotional hurt, mental hurt, spiritual hurt…but we can see the scars and marks and effects of physical pain. And for some reason, physical pains are more socially acceptable, understandable, relatable.

This week we are encouraged to consider all the systems within us and what it means to be functioning optimally. What does it mean to us to really see, feel, hear and know ourselves honestly and completely? When we are “real” about what is happening on the inside of us, we can be more fully present, compassionate and understanding with what is happening outside of us. Just because we can’t see what is going on, doesn’t mean that it isn’t real. Let us honor our feelings and thoughts, follow our intuition as we make choices and decisions that are in our best interest. As we honor ourselves, let us be aware that we hold space for those around us who are experiencing a conflict between their inner and outer worlds too.

If you, or someone you know is struggling to make sense of all the things we cannot see, please reach out to a counselor, coach or trusted someone for support. Please know that you are not alone, and have an abundance of untapped resources within your reach that can help you on your journey.

In strength and love,

Xo Juli
