There Is No Limit to the Currency of Love

I am grateful for the abundance of love in my life, right now. It amazes me how easy it is to generate it within my heart, to share it with the world around me, and how it is such a beautiful and unique gift each time I receive it. The most powerful currency among us is love. And I am rich!

For some it is easy to get caught up in the idea that the world owes us something. But it is a slippery slope that leads us to search outside of ourselves for what we are truly longing for: Love.

I remember years ago in a counselling session that I was encouraged to put myself out there, to do something that would help others.  She told me that if I found myself in service of others the feelings I would experience would be better than the “thing” I thought I was looking for.  And she was right!  As a result, I found myself at a local soup kitchen, serving men, women and children a hot meal – likely the only hot meal they had that day. Although I experienced moments of heartache when serving the toddler in a highchair, I also experienced deep gratitude and love for those whom I was serving. I remember driving home one evening and realizing how very blessed I am, how full my heart felt for sharing a smile and loving hard on the 180 people who passed through the Soup Kitchen that night.  Sometimes, when I am feeling low, running on empty, I remember that little boys smile in the high chair and I am right back in that moment of gratitude, basking in the love again. You see, love is all around us. It’s in the kindness of a stranger, it’s in the pay-it-forward line at Tim Horton’s, it’s in the holding the door for the person behind you, it’s in the smile of the passerby on the sidewalk.  The potential for love is in every breath we take – it is what we were built for.  This human need for love and connection is imperative to our survival.  Think about it for a minute.  If a baby comes into this world and doesn’t get it, what happens to them?  They cannot survive – it is called failure to thrive.  And yet other animals in the kingdom can not only survive but thrive without the connection and love.  We are unique in that love is at the base of our being and without giving or receiving it we are doomed.  The good news is that there is an endless supply of LOVE.  There is no limit – in fact it is the most powerful currency among us.

This week we are encouraged to acknowledge the flow of abundance in our lives, to become aware of love as it comes in and out.  For those that want to join me as we stretch ourselves into service of others in unique and meaningful ways, I challenge you to perform a random act of kindness this week…and don’t get found out.  Do, for the sake of doing.  Love, simply because you can. And then feel the rewards as you watch the ripple effects of that love.
